Ruby's Journal

Friday

It has been a few days. This journal is my Englisch friend, Carly's idea for me. She finds my life so interesting and she feels others may as well. I can not imagine someone would really find this interesting.

I've been over to David Fisher's hous helping Hannah with the wedding planning. Several hundred stalks of celery are stored in the cellar. Some of the celery will be used in the casserole, the main meal at every wedding dinner. The casserole is a mixture of chicken and stuffing, with celery being one of the main ingredients in the stuffing. We'll have creamed celery as well and finally, we will use jars to hold the celery and place them at each table.

Hannah and I have been going over and over the quantity of ingredients. We had planned on over 500 people, but now with bad weather expected, our list is down to 200 people, including the children. It might be bad of me, but I am relieved in the decreased number!

Both she and David grew the extra celery in their gardens over the summer. I know it is a sure give-a-way to the others in the district that a wedding is coming. How could one NOT know.

Usually, the wedding is held at the bride's home, but since our home is at least four times the size of David's  home, we'll have the wedding here. Also, we keep up the property and the house, painting frequently and scrubbing all the time. Not that David's home is bad, he's a single man and Hannah can't do all the cooking and housework by herself.

We will prepare two meals for the big day. Hannah has a list of helpers to clear tables and wash dishes, in addition to those that will be ushers and others to care for all the horses brought by the guests.

Following the three hour service, the couple are simply wed. Then at noon the meal is ready.

Matthew and Hannah will not be staying at her father, David's home over the winter as tradition dictates. They have their own home, the huge farm stay is in Matthew's name. He is the home and business owner now and Hannah runs the household.

Oh my, time has flown and I need to get busy to make our supper. Possibly, this journal is a good idea. I don't feel nearly as stressed once I have written about it.

Hello Journal.

Is this how a person starts? I have never attempted this before. Um...clunky, as my son Matthew, would say.

Oh my, there is so much to get done. I keep telling myself I am a strong Amish woman and I can handle this, but a wedding? I need more time and more help. Matthew is marrying the girl next door, Hannah Fisher. Hannah's mother has passed so I am helping her father, David Fisher with the celebration. Counting all his kin coming and all of my family, there will be over 500 people in attendance. That is if the weather behaves. Wedding season is late October through December, after the autumn harvest. There are weddings to attend. Usually, they are on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

I should get moving. Matthew has finished adding a room to the dawdi house where I have moved. It connects to the large kitchen in the main house, now a Farm Stay. I have a small efficiency kitchen in the dawdi house, but I still do the majority of the cooking for our guests.

Still, I have items I want to move over to my small, cozy place. I love it there. Once Hannah learns all the ropes to running a large business, I'll be able to cut back and let the young couple work together to succeed. I plan to keep busy pampering the boppoli they will have. I love babies!
